What do you know about me and my fellow sheep?  I have some things you might be interested in.  There are over 1 billion sheep in the world.  China has the largest number of sheep in the world.  Adult female sheep are known as ewes.  Adult male sheep are known as rams.  A group of sheep is known as a herd, flock or mob.  Young sheep are called lambs.  Sheep have a field of vision of around 300 degrees, allowing them to see behind themselves without having to turn their head.  Sheep are herbivores that eat vegetation such as grass.  The digestive system of sheep features four chambers which help break down what they eat.  Sheep like to stay close to others in a herd which makes them easier to move together to new pastures.  In 1996, a sheep named Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from a somatic cell.  Domesticated sheep are raised for a number of agricultural products including fleece and meat.

So, that is the lesson for the day and now onto the important business.

March 17, 2018, is the day!  The Woolwrights Annual Spring Hook-In is right on target!  Are you ready to meet up with friends, old and new, shop till you drop, and enjoy a wonderful day in Lancaster County once again?  Well, the Woolwrights are ready and working to make this hook-in one of your best experiences coming up for the spring of 2018 AND THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE WOOL IN THE BUILDING!  Keep checking back for additional information about the vendors, the rug show, the mat swap, and other events occurring on St. Patrick's Day 2018!  We look forward to seeing all of you!

FEATURED IN-HOUSE ARTIST
MJ MILLER

Picture
My journey into the world of wool started many years ago when I was in my 20s.  I took a tailoring class and made a coat for myself.  Even though I would never attempt such a project again, I got my first taste for handling and sewing wool.  About 15 years ago, I started teaching many classes at a local recreation center using wool for appliqués.  I transformed sweatshirts into beautiful wool appliqué cardigans.  As time went on, I continued to make more things out of woolen fabric.  Then I discovered rug hooking.  Cindy Irwin was my teacher.  She opened up a new world of rediscovering wool using it in a new way.  I loved it!  After joining Woolwrights, I tried selling some of my first pincushion and bird designs at the Members Vendor Table at the Woolwrights hook-in.   Since that time, my designs have evolved into much more intricate designs, over 35  different ones  and I continue to create new items in my design studio.  I look at wool in a totally different way than hookers.  Instead of thinking how it will look when hooked, I think how it will look as a rooster body, or squirrel fur or even  a sheep’s face.  I combine my sewing and needle felting skills to make some very unique products.  I now have my own business: “Mary Jane Miller, Wool and Fiber Artist” and vend at several hook-ins during the year.  I also have a large amount of my work for sale at a local store in Lancaster County.   My husband, Taylor, as been a great supporter, and makes all my wooden stands and loves to give names to my “creations”.  My work is truly rewarding and a “labor of love”!

GARY SIMMONS -
THE SILVERSMITH

Gary specializes in sterling silver jewelry pendants. Each piece is hand crafted and is a process of how I'm led to match a shape to a design. Sheep dollars use pre-1900 dollars, and the sheep are cast in sterling silver using a mold I designed and own. I use silver solder to attach the sheep, and each one comes with a rolled Grecco leather 18 inch necklace and each one is handcrafted by me.  To view other designs, go to Facebook under Gary the Silversmith.

THE WOOL FARM
Spring is fast approaching, I know winter has not even gotten here yet, but trust me spring will be here before you know it!!  So with that in mind I am excited to tell you about what we will be bringing to the Woolwrights Hook-in on March 17th.  Of course, there will be dyed wools, dyed whipping yarns to match any of our dyed wools, Rauma Ryegarn whipping yarns with many new colors added, some fiber fluff, some hand spun yarns, a wee bit of alpaca yarn for hooking or knitting, hooks, all new rug hooking patterns, plus footstool bases and patterns.  See you all soon!!

Picture
THE WOOL 'N GARDENER

The Wool’n Gardener will again be offering a large selection of new hand-dyed wools and, as always, new colors have been added and range from the richest and deepest primitive palette to soft pastels – in between are those marvelous brights!!!!   In addition, new base wools have been used which produced some incredible variations of colors (of old and new formulas).  As usual, we will also be offering one-of-a-kind spot and sparkle dyes as well as other dyeing methods such as shiborhi, marbleized wools, and silk tie dyeing.  Wool packages are available which include several values of either all hand-dyed wools – or hand-dyed and as-is wools (some of which may be from my “vintage” stash).  Other items for sale are adaptations of acquired antique rug patterns and limited finished items.  I have recently acquired a “new” antique rug (found in a barn)!  The pattern is very simple but suitable for those scraps and noodles we all have lying around!  A great piece to go back and forth to when working on another project!

Special offering for the hook-in:
  1. The ever-so-popular NAME THAT COLOR contest will once again be offered.  The winner will be randomly selected from the entries and receive ½ yard of that newly named wool ($21.00 value)!
  2. All yellow/gold hand-dyed ¼ yd pieces will be offered at $10.00 each.

SWAP MATS
THEME : FEBRUARY

The theme this year is "FEBRUARY"!  What are we supposed to do with that?  Well, do you know all the things that happen in the month or February or other interesting events that have happened in history in that very cold month?  All these days occur in February:  The Chinese New Year, Valentines Day, National Freedom Day, Groundhog Day, Presidents Day, Mardi Gras, Black History Month, American Heart Month, Chocolate Lovers Month, National Bird Feeding Month, and National Dental Month!  Do you need more ideas?  There is always snow in February or hearts or things red or chocolate!  I think you can probably dream up a plan for a rug from all these ideas!  So draw your pattern and remember it should be no bigger than 120 square inches and the mat can be in any shape you would like.   THE MAT SHOULD BE LABELED ON THE BACK WITH YOUR NAME AND CITY.  Hook your mat and bring it to the hook-in and you will be able to get a mat from someone else who had a dream of a plan for February!

Keep checking in on the Woolwrights website for more information regarding the hook-in.
