THE 2014 SAUDER VILLAGE EXPEDITION
We had been planning for this excursion since March. We needed a bed and a pillow to lay our weary bodies after the trip. There were no rooms available at Sauder Village in the early spring, so we got reservations 12 miles away. First, one room, two people, then two rooms, eight people, then three rooms, nine people. We finally made the trip with eight people and we drove straight through from Lancaster. It was a nine hour drive by the time we stopped a few times and had lunch. We were packing minimally for the trip. We had our essentials, clothing for three days, reading material, cameras, rug hooking materials, ear plugs for everyone, and, of course, cookies! We had one promise to each other……. No one was buying anything!!! And if you saw anyone trying to make a purchase, you were to step in and help them focus!
We got to Sauder shortly after five and everything had closed down for the evening, but to our surprise, they found three rooms for us. We were thrilled. We attended a small discussion group for the evening and got to see some of the projects people had started during the week.

So after a dinner and a night’s rest, we were ready. Remember, we are not shopping. We are just there to view the rugs. The rug show was incredible. Every corner you turned, there was another piece of art that took your breath away. The displays were beautiful. We were able to visit with the artists and meet people from all over the U.S. and Canada. We met people who were friends with friends of ours from other parts of the country. This is such a small world and rug hooking certainly brings us together.
As you will see directly below, Arleen's orginal design "Bahamian Sea Life" in just simply beautiful. She got an Honorable Mention for the Celebration Rugs. It is just a wonderful design. Right below Arleen's masterpiece are Deb's rugs, "Laszlo" and "Colby Courthouse" which were designed by Barbara Carroll and a part of the antique coverlet exhibition.

So on Saturday evening, we started on our way back home. We only drove a couple of hours to make our final trip home on Sunday a little shorter. We all had a wonderful time. It gave us an opportunity to get to know each other better. We stayed up late like school girls, laughed until we cried, told stories, and gave tips to each other about rug hooking. And, yes, we did shop!
It’s always a learning experience when you travel. We now know who sleeps quietly, who snores, who can’t sleep through the night, and who gets up during the night. But one thing we do know for sure, we are good friends and will be ready to travel again together.
