THE WOOLWRIGHTS FEATURED MEMBER VENDOR
****SUE COPENHAVER****
****SUE COPENHAVER****
The Woolwrights are very excited this year to feature our member, Sue Copenhaver. Sue is an incredible artist and she be will showing and selling her Pysanky eggs. Wouldn't these be great gifts for Easter or any holiday celebration!! Here is Sue's story and photos of her work....
Sue grew up in Arnold, PA, with a Ukrainian grandmother upstairs. Her Bubba crocheted, wove rag rugs, fermented sauerkraut in a 10 gallon crock, made pierogies every Friday, and wrote Ukrainian Easter eggs during Lent. Sue’s dad made wooden kistky, a lathe, and dyes from crepe paper so the family could write on eggs with beeswax. This folk art called "Pysanky" stayed with Sue as she raised a family, taught 2nd graders, and found others who loved to write stories on eggs using traditional designs and dye combinations.
Sue sees hooking with fibers and writing with wax as sister folk arts. Both start with a finding a story to tell using bits of color (wax or wool) on a natural material (egg or linen) and connecting to a community of passionate makers.
Today, as she sits at her egg table in Hershey, PA, Sue writes with an electric kistka and has 48 dyes choices. She invites old and new friends who want to write their own story on a chicken or goose egg. Since February 24, 2022, Sue writes the story of humanitarian aid for Ukraine through "Pysanky" and she is learning how to make pierogis that taste like her Bubba’s.

Welcome Spring!!!
It’s hard to believe that it has been three years – but….we are back!!!! We again will have a large selection of luscious hand-dyed wools and new colors dyed over new base wools, one-of-a-kind spot, and sparkle dyes as well as other dyeing methods like shibori. We will have a full range of colors from the richest and deepest primitive palette to pastels – in between are those marvelous brights – and don’t forget our varied palettes of color based upon the subtle colors of Roseville Pottery, fraktur art and redware pottery.
Have fun rummaging through the wool packages (which may include a variety of hand-dyed wools – and some mixed packages with hand-dyed and as-is wools)! Full 1 yard and ½ yard pieces of dyed wool (they show the true effect of the mottling) will be available – great for backgrounds or large areas of applique.
Don’t forget our pattern selection (some of which are adaptations of antique rugs owned by The Wool’n Gardener). We are also honored to offer 65+ patterns designed by Therese Shick!!!

Hello, I'm Susan of Susan Gonzales Designs. I started drawing designs for wool appliqué' in the end of 2016. I have since grown to include rughooking patterns, stitchery, and punch needle. I have always enjoyed sketching and painting, but most of all, I love color and what one color can do for another . I worked in a quilt shop for many years and loved helping pick fabrics for the quilters. This was another way to work with colors. I learned a lot there and this is where I started designing. I have been a rug hooker for over 20, but never claim to be that great at it. The same with wool appliqué', I love drawing designs and doing the sample, but I know I am far from perfect. I enjoy seeing my designed done by someone else.
My daughter has joined me with some of her designs, Jo Digerness Designs working with wool and wire and we make a wonderful team. I have been vending at some of the best rug hooking venues, never tiring of meeting people. My website is susangonzalesdesigns.com and also an Etsy site. Contact me for any special needs. My husband handles all shipping and has built a studio which is my happy place and visitors are welcome. Come see my samples and kits. Message me at [email protected].
