Hooking and Embellishing with Ali Strebel
Eyes, polka dots, clipped loops, couching, weaving, chain stitches, spider webs and shingles...... Just what is this all about? These are all techniques that Ali is teaching the Woolwrights at her workshop this week. Today, everyone was learning all the different techniques and then the next two days will be spent working on their own individual projects. The embellishments that were displayed were just awe inspiring and make you wonder how these things were ever thought of. Ali had her own jewelry, roving, and, of course, beautiful wools as you will see from the photos. Thanks to Ali for coming and allowing our imaginations to flow freely with our new projects.
BRINGING IN THE SPRING WITH ERIC SANDBERG
Spring has finally and surely arrived here in Lancaster County and everyone is ready to be out in the world and the Woolwrights had the good fortune to have Eric Sandberg come to educate us in the planning of our rugs for three days in the beginning of May. The first day was spent with no hooking, but listening to and learning from Eric as he explained his ideas and thoughts about each person's rug. Everyone was very happy with the class and said they had learned so many things that would continue to help them with planning their rug and rugs to come. "Participants enjoyed his humorous responses to our color choices. He taught his famour color planning technique of dark, dull, light and bright and reviewed the use of the color wheel." As rugs are completed, we will continue to post rugs from Eric's class. There are six photos of rugs from Eric's collection posted below. Thanks to Connie for additional photos.

Christmas 2013 at The Barn
The Woolwrights gathered once again at Sugarplums & Tea in the barn. It was a bright, sunny day inside and out. There was a flock of sheep that came with Gail and I have to say myself that they were quite tasty. We had a very joyous group of hookers. There was a great buffet luncheon. We played games and were fearlessly led in several Christmas carols by MJ, Sarah, Janice, and Bonnie. This event also included some dancing and, of course, there were rugs to behold! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Whimsical Designs with Nancy Jewett
It was a beautiful ride over, wonderful fall colors of oranges and red, woolly caterpillars crossing the roads in the brilliant sunlight and the bluest of blue skies, but nothing was more brilliant than the colors of Fluff and Peachy Beans. The Woolwrights have been graced with the presence and talents of Nancy Jewett for three days. There were patterns, gorgeous wools, jewelry, and the most wonderful rugs that Nancy brought with her as examples of her work. The rugs the girls were working on were just unbelievably beautiful and I know we will all look forward to seeing their completion. On Saturday, Nancy had an open discussion telling us the stories of her rugs and the events in her life that gave her the inspiration for her designs. She also gave us tips on color planning, dyeing, borders, etc. Thanks to Nancy for coming to visit the Woolwrights and giving everyone the "Fluff and Peachy Bean" inspiration. Nancy's email is [email protected] and her website is www.fluffpeachybeandesigns.com.

Woolwrights Annual Day Picnic
What a wonderful fun day! We met this year for our annual picnic at Sugarplums & Tea just outside of Lancaster, PA, and we had about 40 hookers attend. It was a great day. We had lunch catered by Sugarplums & Tea. We had a paper bag challenge and we had a unbelievable show & tell with all of our projects. We also had a wool raffle with beautiful wools.
The idea for the paper bag challenge was shown to us several of months by Patti and you would receive a brown paper bag with an item for inspiration, ie. mailing label, rubber band, earring, pinecone, shoe horn, or a paper patriotic cup. From those inspirations, you can then hook a rug or pillow or whatever and it was so much fun to see what people can do.
It is always just so interesting to me to go everytime we have a chance to get together and see every kind of rug project every imagined and ideas just keep streaming out from our of creative minds. What a joy to see our friends and be able to enjoy the company of everyone. Thanks to all of you for coming, your ideas, encouragement, lessons, compliments, and friendships. This such a very special day.

Geometrics with Barb Gott
The room was filled with wool, frames, hooks, patterns and members of the Woolwrights along with Barb Gott for two days of classes teaching everyone the ins and outs of geometrics. As you will see, there are so many different variations of geometrics, colors, and styles. Our thanks to Barb for coming to share her talents and color planning with us. We will have to take photos when everyone is completed with their rug.

BRAIDING WITH KRIS MCDERMET
In April of 2013, Kris McDermot traveled to Lancaster County from Vermont to give a braiding workshop for the Woolwrights on four different days. Her work is just beautiful and as you will see from the photos, there are so many different ways that braiding can be used on your rugs. THE CARPETBAGGERS CLASS WITH CINDY IRWIN
On Saturday, October 20, 2012, McGown instructor and WW member, Cindy Irwin taught a class on how to make a carpet bag. Nine women attended the class. Cindy brought several samples of carpet bags that she had made including the one that she was currently using. She also brought a wonderful assortment of
gem stones for embellishments and, of course, some yummie hand-dyed wool.
The morning was spent working on the hooked motif and selecting and placing
the gem stones for those who chose to use them. In the afternoon, Cindy
demonstrated and explained how to construct the bag.
So, all nine women are challenged to complete their carpet bags. Cindy will, of course, be available for assistance as needed. It was a great class and I think everyone in the class is excited about her progress and anticipating carrying her carpet bag to the next (or a future) WW meeting.
Thank you to Connie Bateman for the articles and the photos.
SNITZ FEST AT THE 1719 HANS HERR HOUSE
Every year in October, the Hans Herr House Museum holds an event called the "Snitz Fest". The “Hans Herr House" is the oldest extant dwelling of a settlement on ten thousand acres granted in October of 1710 to nine Mennonite men. People in period attire show examples of threshing, blacksmithing, quilting, candle making and many other crafts. This year, Mary Lynne and Anne attended and showed their talents in rug hooking.
WOOLEYRUGGER PENNY RUGS WITH JANICE SONNEN
During the month of September, the Woolwrights had the opportunity to experience the history and technique of penny rugs with Janice Sonnen. Janice attended both of our meetings and brought with her an array of penny rugs, antique hooked rugs, appliqued rugs, kits to make your own penny rugs, completed penny rugs, and her book with a multitude of patterns and ideas. Janice is a juried member of both the Reading Berks Craftsman Guild and the Pennsylvania State Craftsman Guild and has been recognized for her rug hooking in the Early American Life Directory of Crafts.
Thank you, Janice, for being a part of our meetings and inspiring all of us! For more information you may contact Janice at [email protected]

FORT HUNTER
On Sunday, September 16, Anne Stevens, Mary Lynne Naples, Bonnie Waltz, and Judy Fackler spent the day demonstrating rughooking at Fort Hunters, a 40 acre site from an old French and Indian war fort just north of Harrisburg operated by the Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Department. Per Anne "the weather was glorious, the grounds were full of visitors, many with small children having a wonderful time doing crafts, getting their faces painted, trying to walk on stilts or roll hoops, eating all sorts of wonderful food, and pulling loops at our rughooking area". It sounds like a wonderful day that is held annually on the third Sunday of September. Photos below:

2011 WOOLWRIGHT'S ANNUAL PICNIC
To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment. ~Jane Austen
On August 12, 2011, the Woolwrights held our annual picnic at Mary's beautiful home in southern Lancaster County. As you can see from the photos, it was a beautiful day to be outside in nature. This was also the day for members to show off their other talents as some photos show and, of course, there was time for hooking and show and tell of rugs completed and rugs in progress. Thank you for a great day, Mary!
2011 WOOLWRIGHTS ANNUAL EVENING PICNIC
On August 23, 2001, the Woolwrights had our evening picnic at the church where we usually meet. It was a beautiful night and if we had thought of it, we would have brought a blanket along and eaten outside. Although, the group was small, we enjoyed the evening with great food and conversation. Members shared their talents and their current projects with each other.
