A very special exhibit of hooked rugs showcasing the work of internationally recognized artists is being sponsored by The Pearl K. McGown National Guild and hosted by two Lancaster area rughooking guilds, The Conestoga Rug Crafters and The Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild, on October 14-16, 2022. The exhibit featuring over 100 works will focus on recreating the art of the golden age of fairy tale illustrations, a magical time of artwork which ranged from the 1860's to the 1920's. These classic works will be translated into the American unique fiber art of rughooking for which the Lancaster area is well renowned. The curated exhibit features McGown trained rughooking teachers, which means they are nationally recognized and certified for their expertise in both the art and craft of rughooking from across the United States, Canada, and Japan. The exhibit will also allow attendees the opportunity to enjoy lectures on the works and related topics as well as to sign up for classes on learning rughooking skills. Rughooking experts from across the country are expected to attend. Vendors with a wide array of rug hooking materials will be available. We are very excited to be among the first stops in a nationwide tour of these art rugs.
FAIRYTALE TEACHERS
VIVILY POWERS
Vivily is a McGown accredited teacher and fiber artist. She is a member of McGown, ATHA, and Nova Scotia guilds. In the early 80's, Vivily's love of textiles, color, and dyeing led her to purchase the Colorama line of swatches and she has continued to expand the line over the years to accommodate student needs. She attends and teaches at several workshops annually to further her education.
As the owner of Colorama Wool, she vends and teaches at rug camps, group meetings, and the ATHA Biennial in the United States, and Canada.
Vivily is known for her color planning expertise and custom dyed wool. She enjoys all aspects of rug hooking from the planning, dyeing, and teaching a design to her students.
Vivily will be teaching a three day workshop for "The Red Shoe" which can be hooked in the larger version or a smaller version with the girl only.

ROBIN RENNIE
I learned to knit at my grandmother’s knee at the age of three and have loved fibers ever since. Although I enjoy all fiber arts, rughooking and needle felting are my passions. My hooking ranges from folk art primitive pieces to realistic, finely shaded work. Needle felting is the medium I use to produce my “fantasy figures”, sculpted from unspun wool roving. When not hooking and felting, I worked for over forty years as student advisor both undergraduate and graduate students, and then as high-level program administrator at The University of Michigan and Michigan State University. I ran my own consulting firm working with top tier universities and the National Science Foundations. I now spend my time working with wool, petting cats, and enjoying grandchildren.
I developed and co-chair the "Hooked on Fairytales: The Golden Age of Illustration Project" with Melissa Pattacini. I have been a certified McGown rug hooking teacher since 2005. I serve as Executive Advisor on the Board of Directors on for the McGown National Rug Hooking Guild. I am a member of The Southwestern Michigan Rug Hookcrafters, McGown Guild, Chapter 2, The Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild, and The American Federation of Traditional Hooking Artists, Chapter 106.
"The Cat and Mouse in Partnership" - This will be a fun class in which you will learn an easy technique to both hook and shade with a three-cut. Impossible you say? Using a 4-value swatch, you will create shaded kitties with cute faces, along with a quick way to create the other elements in this recreation of an 1882 woodcut. If you have only used wide-cut before, this class will make you wonder why you have not tried using fine cut before and it will make you a better wide-cut hooker. If you are an experienced fine shader, this is a good chance to learn a couple of new tricks, especially about tiny faces. Plus, I promise to throw in a few fairy tales and some hooking trivia!
Since this is a one day class, there will be a wool kit which includes all of the rug elements except the sky background.
